Houston Chapter Membership Committee

SIPES has one of the strongest certification programs for experienced business professionals in the earth sciences. Members are certified for their professional experience, competence and ethics. The Houston Chapter has 207 members and is growing. Members are encouraged to introduce their society to qualified potential members who would add their talents and strengths to the sum of the existing group.

Additional advantages of SIPES membership are networking and contacts, professional development, technical information, career growth, educational resources, publications, leadership opportunities, and recognition.

If you are already a member, Houston SIPES Chapter dues of $40 can be mailed in. You can download and print the dues form here.

National Membership Requirements

A summary of the requirements for membership are:

  • A science or engineering degree leading to a career in the earth sciences.
  • 12 years of practice in the field of earth science. The years of experience required may be fulfilled by self-employment, as well as employment in industry, government or education as an earth scientist. Credit is given for degrees received from accredited universities.
  • Members must be independent or self-employed with freedom of choice of clients and business associates.
  • The sponsorship of three SIPES members is required. Applicants who reside outside of a SIPES chapter state, may use SIPES sponsors or other professionals who are familiar with the applicants experience in the earth sciences. SIPES  has a membership reciprocity agreement the Division of Professional Affairs of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers, and AIPG.  Sponsors are not required for members of those organizations.
  • You can download and print a SIPES Application Form here.

Keep in mind that we welcome younger members to SIPES, and that we have a Junior Member Category for those who meet all qualifications except for the required years of professional experience. We should consider it a challenge to get more young earth scientists actively involved in SIPES!

Also, be aware of the Chapter Affiliate Category. This is for persons who wish to affiliate with local chapters, but who do not qualify for full SIPES membership. The Chapter Affiliate designation is restricted to persons associated with an enterprise that is actively engaged in the application of earth sciences (exploration and production people, landmen, geotechnicians, etc. would qualify), or students studying earth science.

Contact our Membership Chairman Jim Grubb with names of candidates. He also welcomes your suggestions for attracting new members, young or old.
